About Central PA

LSGPA serves a wide geographic area — 42 of Pennsylvania's 67 counties. Life sciences hubs are situated in the State College, Harrisburg-Hershey, and Lehigh Valley areas, though activity also can be found in other areas, most notably Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Lancaster.

Among the region's assets are more than 60 institutions of higher learning, including three major research universities: The Pennsylvania State University (PSU), ranked No. 11 nationwide in terms of sponsored research funding; Lehigh University, with strengths in engineering, including bioengineering, and business; and the Penn State College of Medicine.

The region is also home to more than 200 established life sciences companies, with concentrations in medical devices, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and contract research and development. More than 400 other companies can be classified as life-sciences related, providing goods like laboratory equipment or services such as those required by labs and research institutions.
