Central Pennsylvania: A Fertile Environment for Life Sciences Growth

The Life Sciences Greenhouse of Central Pennsylvania’s 42-county service area contains more than 60 institutions of higher learning, including three major research universities: Penn State University (PSU), ranked No. 11 nationwide in terms of sponsored research funding; Lehigh University, with strengths in engineering (including bioengineering) and business; and the Penn State College of Medicine, an academic health center.

These three institutions serve as centerpieces for the life sciencesA cluster of scientific disciplines concerned with human life and health. Included are many branches of biology (e.g., molecular biology, cell biology) and chemistry (e.g., biochemistry), as well as some areas of genetics, physics and materials science, among others. hubs in the State College, Lehigh Valley and Harrisburg-Hershey areas. Life sciences activity can also be found throughout our region, most notably in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Lancaster, Reading and York, with the northeastern part of our region showing increased interest and potential in the biotechnology sector.

Strategically located close to major domestic and international markets, Central Pennsylvania is home to more than 200 established life sciences companies, with concentrations in medical devices, contract research and development, and pharmaceutical manufacturing. More than 400 other companies can be classified as “life-sciences related,” participating in various stages of development of human health-enhancing products, providing goods like laboratory equipment, or services such as those required by labs and research institutions.

Backing it all is a Commonwealth that embraces and invests in policies and practices that promote enterprise creation. LSGPA was established along with our sister Greenhouses in Southeastern and Western Pennsylvania through a $100-million investment from Pennsylvania’s settlement with the tobacco industry. Further, life sciences entities are able to speak more effectively with one voice through Life Sciences Pennsylvania, an industry group formed “to ensure Pennsylvania is the global leader in the biosciences.”
